Mission Statement

The Pierre-Janet Foundation was created in 1990 with a mission to serve as fundraising arm for the Pierre-Janet Hospital, the only psychiatric hospital in the Outaouais region. The whole Province of Quebec has only 6 psychiatric hospitals, of which merely two meet the needs of all segments of the population, that is children, teenagers, adults and seniors, namely the Douglas Institute in Montreal and the Pierre-Janet Hospital.

The Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation has ranked the Pierre-Janet Hospital among the most important health institutions in Quebec, giving it first place in Quebec for its creativity and its high-quality best practices.

Affiliated with McGill University, Ottawa University and l'Université du Québec en Outaouais, the Pierre-Janet Hospital is the only psychiatric hospital in Quebec having as a primary mandate to provide short-term care, i.e. it must spare no effort in order for patients to receive specialized treatment as close as possible to their living environment and for the families and loved ones to be both informed and supported.  This accounts for the low number of beds within the institution, namely 87 for the hospitalization of children, teenagers, adults, senior citizens and for legal psychiatry.  The Pierre-Janet Hospital can also count on some fifty family-type resources housing close to 210 users. More than 8,500 people receive treatment in the Centre annually.

The goals of the Foundation are to raise funds allowing the Hospital to maintain and increase the range of services being offered, to contribute to funding earmarked for the construction and or renovation of buildings with a view to strengthening housing facilities for its clientele in the community and to implementing clinical projects.  The Foundation also subsidizes clinical research projects on mental health and its strives to improve the quality of life of its users, whether they be children, teenagers, adults or seniors.
